DURING FALL SEASON OPENINGS
San Jose's shines with a variety of drama, concerts and comedy
SAN JOSE, CA (October 17, 2008) – The beginning of fall indicates the unofficial opening of theater season in the Downtown San Jose arts venues. The newly renovated California Theater, the Center for the Performing Arts, the Montgomery Theater and the Civic Auditorium, showcase a variety of cultural and performing arts events in the heart of the Silicon Valley for visitors of all ages. Here is a preview of what is coming up:
The newly renovated California Theatre has been transformed into not only a major performing arts center but also a lavish conference and meeting facility. Symphony Silicon Valley debuted "Mendelssohn & Beethoven" yesterday and will run through October 19th. Maestro George Cleve opens with Beethoven's 1st Symphony, written at the peak of the composer's classicism and instantly hailed as a masterpiece; and concludes with Debussy's brilliant La Mer. Also at the California Theatre, Opera San Jose presents "The Elixir of Love", November 8-23. Italian melodies provide plenty of opportunities to showcase both singing and acting make this one of the most popular comedies in the repertoire. For tickets, visit www.operasj.org/. Open the holiday season early in the theater with "Unwrap the Holidays with the Voices in Harmony", November 29, at 3 p.m. Experience the joyous music of the holiday season in the rich and resonant tones of Voices in Harmony, Northern California's premier men's a capella chorus. With seating for over 2,000, the Center for the Performing Arts is carrying a busy schedule with five big, upcoming shows. American Musical Theatre of San Jose presents "Flower Drum Song", October 18–November 9. Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang's new adaptation centers on Mei-Li who arrives in 1960 San Francisco Chinatown after fleeing communist China. For tickets, visit www.sjtix.com/. Zingaris & Asha for Education present "Utsav: A Celebration of Dance", October 18, at 6 p.m. Zingaris is an award winning Indian dance troupe based in Northern California that combines its passion for dance with support for noble causes. Sound of the Ocean by U-Theater presented by Dimension Performing Arts, the show the New York Times calls "mesmerizing" is holding one performance on November 15 at 8 p.m. Experience the heart pounding artistry of this ancient art form live in San Jose. The story revolves around the beautiful daughter of a Spanish innkeeper and her love for a brave and handsome toreador, whom she cannot bear to see in danger. Live Nation presents a sold out show with the iconic comedy duo of Cheech & Chong on for November 30 at the Center for the Performing Arts. Their first tour in over 25 years is an epic cross country U.S. trek with this only stop in San Jose.
As the permanent home of the San Jose Children's Musical Theater, a recent renovation to the Montgomery Theater has given the theater an elegant appearance. Children's Musical Theater presents two Disney classics in Disney's "Alice in Wonderland", November 20-23, at the Montgomery Theater and "Peter Pan", December 5-14.
